Bont (or Pont), meaning bridge in Welsh, is a crisp, citrusy and balanced, small batch gin. At our micro-distillery, we bridge together a beautiful recipe of carefully selected botanicals from locally foraged wild rosemary to zesty orange peel to create a unique Welsh gin.
Bont Gin is an authentic London Dry (Llundain Sych) – meaning all flavouring and botanicals are added during or before the distillation process and never afterwards. Enjoy Bont Gin over ice with a fresh slice of orange. Pair it with premium tonic or ginger ale. Iechyd Da!
London Dry is simply a dry style of gin, clear and unsweetened. It is named so because historically most of the distillers making this type of gin were based in London, so bottled their products as “London Dry Gin” and the name stuck.
Bont Gin of course isn’t made in London, nowhere near in fact. Bont is a small batch gin, handcrafted in our micro-distillery and bar in South Wales.
However, because “London Dry” is a quality designation, any gin using the term must conform to certain rules. It has to be made by distilling natural botanicals using a base neutral alcohol of 96% ABV and nothing can be added after the distillation process - no flavourings, no syrups, no further botanicals, only water.
We truly believe in the value of maximising the human touch and craftsmanship at every stage of the process of making Bont Gin.
Everything from maceration, distillation, bottling, labelling and sampling (our favourite bit) is authentically small batch and Welsh. We even use our own demineralised Welsh water to bring Bont Gin down to the desired 40%.
All of this means we can ensure everything is of the highest standard and in turn, by purchasing a bottle of Bont Gin or ordering a glass of it at your favourite bar/restaurant means you really are supporting local.
Well, our name is a simple nod to our connections with Bridgend (Pen-y-bont) and Cowbridge (Y Bont-faen) but the history behind our gin, our garnish and our bottle runs much deeper… into, believe it or not, milk!
After being founded by brothers in 1947, the hot summers of the 50s & 60s gave Bridgend Creamery a headache as the shelf-life of milk would naturally shorten. However, this gave them the idea to diversify. They adapted their bottling plant to produce an orange juice drink alongside milk, then sold it via their electric floats. The juice was an enormous success and rivalled dairy sales for many years.
The zesty orange flavour profile of Bont Gin and our recommendation of a slice of fresh orange as garnish is homage to that once famous pure orange juice. The cow on our label, our white bottle and the recyclability of it is a tribute to the creamery, it’s bottling plant and the durable, iconic British milk bottle.
We’re the house pour at Nolton Corner & The Coach in Bridgend as well as 1 Town Hall Square & The Cross Inn in Cowbridge, but we also supply a plethora of good pubs, bars, restaurants and shops across South Wales and further afield.
We use a secret blend of cassia bark, fresh orange peel and rosemary, amongst other things. We distill via vapour infusion to allow the delicate flavours to shine through and to ensure Bont is of the highest quality we never use any distillates below 75%.
Our still is a gas-fired, split top, rotating column copper alembic. We imported it from Portugal in 2019 and it sits on display behind viewing glass for all to see in our distillery, which is based at our Bridgend bar: Nolton Corner.
